August 2009

It's August already!?!? Finished compost is being put in the garden around the plants. When these bins (Photo 1) are almost empty, they will become the new units for the organic material such as orange peels, coffee grounds and grass clippings. The current bin for this (Photo 2), as usual, needs to be turned and chopped a little! It's hard to keep up sometimes, but Mother Nature will continue to do the work anyway. Photo 3 is a view of the garden with the sunflowers in the background. The seed packet said they will grow to 12 ft, so we will see about that! Photo 4 is the area where the "black gold" compost will be put now and Photo 5 is a particularly magnificent lily. Happy composting!

June 2009

It's very busy in the garden. Organic material in the composter needs to be turned over and chopped a little. After a week or so, it will be the "black gold" that is ready to put on the plants. Here is a blooming poppy plant that was started from seed a few years ago. Everything is green and growing! Must get back to the garden now!

Spring is here!

Spring is really here! The tulips are up, and everything is that special bright green color that only Spring can claim. The composter is ready to get back to work, too. The plants want a nice layer of compost now! Time must be found to tend to the garden. The composter has both bins full of the "black gold", ready now after a long winter.

Spring is Coming!

Spring is definitely coming!  It's been a long winter up here in the North Country.  As you can see from the photo of the composters, ice is still on the ground.  The composters have been waiting patiently.  We have 2 double bins in use and as soon as things thaw out, the process will heat up and compost will be made.  In the other photo, you can see the garden awaiting the warming of the earth and a rich compost treat.

What's growing?

Something is growing in the rich soil of Steve's Earth Engine. What is it? Renegade tomato seeds from composted tomatoes! It's a truckload of tomato plants!
